Rotary Club of Lockport Announces Recipients of $8,000 in College Scholarships

Austin McFall, 2015 graduate of Lockport High School, has been selected this year to receive a Rotary Club of Lockport Academic College Scholarship of $2,000 per year for four years for his studies in business and finance at Niagara University at Niagara University, NY.  He is the son of Michael and Ronda McFall of Lockport.

The Lockport Rotary Club annual college scholarship budget of $10,000 per year is a major commitment of the Lockport NY Rotary Foundation, the tax exempt fundraising and community benefit 501(c)3 corporation established by the Club.  In addition to Austin, several students will continue to receive scholarships awarded in previous years.

Shawn Moore, Lockport High School graduate, will receive his second year of a $2,000 per year four-year Rotary Club of Lockport Academic Scholarship for his studies at SUNY Genesee in Genesee, NY.

Elizabeth Koplas, graduate of Starpoint Central School, will receive her third year of the Rotary Club of Lockport Arthur H. Showalter Memorial Academic Scholarship of $2,000 per year for four years for her studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Jacob Dittenhauser, graduate of Canisius High School, will receive his third year of a Rotary Club of Lockport Academic Scholarship of $2,000 per year for three years for his studies at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York.

Rotary Club of Lockport Scholarships are presented in memory of Arthur H. Showalter, Summer G. Evans, Eleanor Depeau, Samuel Selzer, Howard Lehmann and Donald O. Nixon, former Lockport Rotarians who were dedicated to youth and education.

Lockport Rotary Scholarships are awarded to graduating students living in the Lockport, Newfane or Starpoint school districts and attending the district high school or a regional private or parochial high school.  Selection is based on scholastic achievement, character, leadership in school, extra curricular and community activities, and poise and presence in an interview with the scholarship committee.

Austin and his parents were honored at the Lockport Rotary Club luncheon meeting at Lockport Town and Country Club on Tuesday, August 4, 2015.  All Lockport Rotary Club scholars are invited to return to visit club membership meetings throughout their college careers and beyond as their long term relationship continues.

Members of the Rotary Scholarship Committee are Dr. Ryan Schoenfeld, Chair; Dr. Larry Cappiello; and Nancy Kasprzak-Whitmore.  The committee noted that each year, surprisingly few students apply for the scholarships until Rotary makes an extra effort to remind schools of the opportunity. Students are welcome to make early inquiry and explore the website: http://lockportrotary.com/SitePage/scholarships for more information.
